Can some one please describe to me what is compressor surge is? and what are the noises associated with this? I have trieda search but cant find a definative answer. when accelerating, at about 4000rpm i get this squeel for a second and then it goes. thought it mght be loose pipe , dv leaking but have checked. car is a mapped 03STi.

It rears its ugly head in many ways, can be a chuffing, a twittering etc and can happen on full throttle, part throttle or a closed throttle. It's the sound of the compressor wheel's blades slipping on the air it's supposed to be compressing.

I get full throttle compressor surge which is a chuff-chuff-chuff noise just as I go through 4000 revs. It never lasts long, but the more boost I run, the louder it is. Working on a fix right now.

Sounds like the turbo is on its way out Lee. Out of interest are you still using the TMIC?

Ususly a squeel when the turbine catches on the housing

 

oh FFS dont say that Adam , yes still on the tmic. only noticed this squeal since got it mapped. if it is the turbo, this will start a whole new side to the modding .

p.s- it only does it when giving it some and it sounds like its air escaping from a boost pipe or summat. I am going to take the intercooler off and check the pipes tomorrow. must say though it goes like stink.
