Default panel filter or induction kit?

hey i have a 52 WRX, i'm after any comments on upgrading my air filter. previously i had a integra type r and spoon recommend you'd just use there insert as fitting an induction you would be down on power, as honda did such a good job with the standard air box. is this the same with impreza's? has anyone used or heard about K&N 'short ram' enclosed induction kit? any comments would be helpful cheers carl
