Question Rear Wiper Washer - leaks when hard acceleration

My sti has suddenly started to leak rear washer fluid when I floor the accelerator. It's only on hard acceleration.

Why is this suddenly happening and what is the cure?

It's quite a strong leak, and makes a rear mess everytime I boot the car.

I assume you mean leaking onto the screen rather than into the car.

Maybe you just haven't noticed it before. All it is is the fluid in the pipeline not being accelerated at the same rate as the car and therefore being forced out of the nozzle and onto the rear screen.

Yes I mean onto the screen. And believe me after 6 years of owning 3 scoobies I would have noticed.

This problem has just occurred in the last 10 days and it is really irritating. What's the cure? Is there a valve in the system somewhere that has failed?

You need to check/replace the one way valve in the pipe from pump to jet

Yeh, right! There's obviously a one way valve between the jet and the pump preventing washer fluid from heading towards the jet

I think you will find any one way valve is there to prevent the fluid from draining back into the reservoir. Perhaps that has been your problem in the past, the one way valve has not been working properly and the fluid has been draining back a little and not being squirted out.

It only happened on my car when doing a really quick getaway and it was really not a serious problem as I was looking forwards at the time. Just chill a little.

BTTT

anybody got a part number or a supplier for the check valve?

i have unsuccessfully tried am aquarium one way check valve on the car today and it still leaks under acceleration, at the moment i have my old valve fitted which i bunged up with glue to stop it working at all.

i took the old valve out and the spring had snapped inside, the new aquarium one does not look like it has any springs inside at all, probably just a bit to weak in force for what we need.

edit to add, just smashed the aquarium valve open and its a simple silicone plunger inside with no spring, suspect we need the spring to force the valve closed.

no i think you will find the valve is there to actually stop the water coming out the jet in low pressure moments, at high pressure moments the force of the pump overcomes the ball bearing and spring and allows the water to exit the jet.

step away from the toolbox

My problem actually rectified itself after a few annoying weeks. The only thing I can pinpoint as the cure was it stopped after I had the car jetwashed ha ha.

possible debris stopping the ball bearing from sealing up!!

i thought a V7 was a bit to new for the fault, mine is a 97wrx and only started doing it last month

If that's the case an aquarium valve will not work as that is designed to stop back flow.

Sorry for the naff info but all the check valves in washer pipes I have had have been one way valves to prevent back flow into the bottle so the washer works immediately.

Yep. Got a new one from Halfrauds and the old one is situated inside the boot, directly under the rear wiper. You'll see the pipe and then the wee bugger in the line.

Just remember to fit the new valve the same way the instructions tell you to.

how much was the valve?

i tried a universal one and it leaked after 1 day LOL

in the end i took my old valve aprt and the little spring had snapped, i ended up filling the thing with glue to block it up.

Was it a proper fit one for a Scooby, or was it a universally boyo?

Think it was £2.50 but it worked perfectly and that was about 2 months ago now.

One size fits all.
