Default wrc chirp

o.k. have read all the past threads but just cant get a serious answer from anyone who knows what they are talking about. i have a 93 wrx which im currently turning to a stage rally car and its going in to get new ecu and moderate anti lag fitted in a months time. i want the wrc chirp which is most noticed when slowing to approach a corner. dump valve was blocked when i bought the car, and i have a cone filter. so why no chirp???? marc

out of all the turbo'd cars i have had, all i needed was a big cone induction kit to make the waste gate noise nice and loud, but the scooby doesn't make this noise.

i hear ya mate. have read on other threads that blanking off the dump valve and a cone filter will make the noise but no such luck for me. went to tour of cornwall stage rally other night and all the cars were making the noise. i want it!

The noise you are on about is when the compressed air cant get past the butterfly in the throttle body (when you take your foot off the accelerator) and then is forced backward (momentarily) over the turbo blades, thus giving the "chirp"

Having no dump valve will make this happen as the air has no where to go although I don’t recommend you take of the dump valve because im not sure of what other problems you might cause.

It's the wastegate & turbo making the noise but it doesnt to the life span of your Turbo any good making it chirp as they do. You have to remember WRC turbo's are re-built after a weekends driving.

Iv got a BOV and uprated the spring so on light driving it makes a fluttering noise. iv got a TDO5 turbo, cone filter ect and it works lovely

not sure if i would block the dumpvalve off completely though.
oh and the fluttering noise has nothin to do with the wastegate unless you have a external one.

Ben

You're clearly not running enough boost when you lift off!

i second that.
if you have no dumpvalve the only way for the air to go once the butterfly is closed is back through the turbine of the turbo.
god knows where your is going if you cant hear that lol.

not exactly sure of boost figures. i do get a dumpy noise, but its crap. it sounds like a really cheap dump valve. almost like someone twanging one of those springy door stops you can get in hotels and you only get it on change up or lift off not approaching a corner going down gears!

Ok, to start with, Grp A cars cost like, 500k, if your really into getting that noise, just go buy a grp A engine, its probably going to set you back 100k like but you wanted that noise....
What am i getting at?
Why the hell do you want something that could break your standard car, ie lots of boost and anti lag, its going to cost you a packet, and i mean considerable cash to run it.
You want to stick to near standard, you dont need anything fancy, fancy costs money, if you want fancy go buy a prodrive gearbox, they are about 160k, you on the otherhand are running a 93 wrx, just go out there and blat it round as it is, cos thats all you need in reality (except wheels n tyres )

Yeah, i read it, the fact is that if you want to be replacing everything due to excessive wear then kick the *** out of it, if not then leave it standard, you dont have to do much to have fun, even a rally stage car, they cost a packet to run (a few people on here run scoob rally cars, not a cheap hobby).
The fact is, you dont need anti lag, you dont need the chirp, you just need a reliable car, otherwise it will just become a money pit.

I sent a message to the sales team at Prodrive and they indicated that the "chirp" is from the external wastegate. They have it for sale as part of a racing exhaust manifold. I was afraid to ask the price so I didn't.

I'm afraid that is wrong, the WRC subaru doesn't run an external wastegate (although many other wrc cars do).

why dont you record the sound on a cd and play it as you drive failing that you could actually grow up and just enjoy the car without the necessity for chav sounds

Ok, to start with, whats your budget?
If you have lots of cash, just go and buy a rally prepped 2nd hand car, cheaper and have all the bits on, if you are on a tight budget then dont even go there.
If you want a nice sound (well some think its nice, chavvy to others) then go for a dump valve.
Also you have not indicated what sort of rally stages your going to do (ie north west stages, RAC etc) and how many times a year your going to run the car.

seems clear to me pal, run more boost and blank off your DV^^, you've got the DV bit sorted so crank up that TD05 and see what happens...
