Question

I've been hearing a noise from the backend of my P1 of late and wondered what it was, checked on Sunday and it appears to be movement in the rear diff, does anyone know if this is standard at all??

The problem can't be heard when travelling at any sort of speed and only occurs, at less that 5 MPH and then applying the brakes then it kind of goes Clonk, Clonk.

Unhappy

Had the same problem on my 99MY when it was only 1800 miles old! It would occasionally clonk when moving slowly in traffic or when going slowly over bumps. It got progressively worse over a couple of days. I took the dealer mechanic out and he agreed after a couple of hundred yards! When jacked up it had a massive amount of free movement in the rear diff. It was replaced within 3 days, but I never got to know what the problem was inside, it was just sent back to I.M.
Try reversing to see if it is any noisier than you remember, mine was. Also, check the oil level and colour. There shoud be no discolouration, there was on mine.

Thanks for that JohnD,

It looks like a trip back to the dealer and see what they say.

IM stands for International Motors. I know they are behind the finance arm of Subaru, not quite sure what else they are behind.

Behind most Subaru owners by the sound of it!

"how much will the replacement cost"

"bend over and we will show you!"

LOL

Wink

What you are suggesting could be an acceptable alternative to cash, as the replacement diff. unit was in the region of 1800 quid!
