Default Newage wrx - EGT CEL fix problem only on mway *FIXED*

Recently decatted up-pipe on MY01 WRX which removed the EGT sensor. Bought a CEL fix from Hayward & Scott, which is basically a resistor, and it's been fitted correctly to ECU. Car has been Ecutek remapped and other than this glitch is running absolutely fine.

On Idle the CEL fix causes temp reading of 365 (If I remember correctly) on DeltaDash.

On normal driving, no problems including full boost runs, town driving and combinations.

On motorway, when cruising at steady speeds the car throws a CEL - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor after 20mins or so. Been looked at in Delta Dash no other problems logged, all other parameters remain as set on mapping. ECU was reset and was fine until another motorway run when the CEL came on again. I'm assuming same fault code as neither time it missed etc.

Any ideas how I can get round this ?

Anyone know where I can get a OBD cable->USB and some software so that I can do an ecu check and a reset myself till I get it sorted properly.

Cheers
Martin.

Different as on mine, I used to get these symtoms and code after fitting a de-cat(same as you,Only on motorway at cruising speeds). Fitted a cel-fix and cured the problem.

Gives me the impression you have the wrong size resistor or its not quite right some where.

Is it soldered in? sometimes when using scotch blocks or similar you can add a small amound of resistance in the joint which may be causing the problem. Soldering it in would eliminate this.

Martin,
I thought that the CEL fix wired into the ECU block connector was to fix CELs from the second O2 sensor - ie after the downpipe.
Are you mixing this up with the EGT decat?
When I put on a decat up-pipe, I simply jammed a resistor into the connector by the wing. The car was then remapped and I don't recall any need for any tweaking of the map to cope with any EGT CEL.

Before Christmas I had a CEL for the rear O2 sensor crop up quite regularly when crusing about 50 mph at a fixed throttle.
This turned out to be a combination of a gasket leak on the centre section and a threshold signal needing to be tweaked to stop the CEL.

Bugeye EGT CEL fix resistor fits into the connectors in the engine bay (by the wing)adjacent to the Boost solenoid ..... as Butty has just mentioned

2.1K ohm from Maplins 35 pence from memory

yup just what mine did

get the resistor the STI's don't even have the egt sensor - if it bothers you i would go for a gauge inside the cab rather than re fit the std one

I wonder whether Hayward and Scott sent me an O2 sensor CEL fix rather than an EGT sensor fix. I don't need the O2 CEL fix as the threshold has been modified in the map. I specifically requested EGT fix, but the mapper said that the installation instructions were to wire it directly into the ECU loom. I shall investigate.. cheers guys

Now is it 2.1K ohm or 2.2K ohm ...

I did buy a new EGT sensor at a VERY discounted rate from Subaru.

Right I've investigated resistors lol.

2k2 (red/red/red apparently) but what wattage and tolerance do I need.
Maplins website I found

M2K2 - Metal Film 0.6w 13 pence
D2K2 - Metal Film 2W Res 2K2 18 pence
W2K2 - Wirewound 3 Watt Resistor - W/W Min 2k2 33 pence

Dropping back to some physics, Assuming 12v
I = V/R = 12 / 2200 = 5mA
P = V*I = 12 * 5mA = 0.06W

So, a 0.6W resistor should be fine, higher wattage should work but the tolerances would be greater if I remember correctly ??

Fancy a group buy on these stalked!

find your up pipe and you will see the egt sensor in it

follow the cable to a connector about 1 foot along the cable there is a male \ female style connector - pull them apart

on the cable not going to the sensor wedge in the resistor I then wapped mine in insulator tape just to stop it falling out

it may also be worth wiping out the old sensor and replacing it with a bolt as it has been rumored to brake off and end up going through the turbo

I can't remember the bolt size but im sure someone will remind me

Not too bright here either - I originally ordered a CEL fix from H&S, had my mapper fit it assuring him it was for EGT, although he wasnt convinced - it was actually for the O2 sensor which had already been mapped out I've since had to send a sheepish email appologising for talking outa my ar$e

Have a read here and learn from my mistakes lol.

I'd just like a bit of help here too as my EGT CEL fix resistor plays up

I went to Maplins and asked the guy behind the counter for a 2.2K ohm resistor He looked a bit blank and wanted volts / watts etc. I just said it was for a car and I went away with 2 for less than a quid LOL

After installation the CEL went but comes on again from time to time...... I just wonder if I have got the right one ?

I said the Volts was 12 v for a car but I guess the EGT is simply a thermocouple and generates it's own EMF ?

Butty..... what did you buy ??

Cheers

Did the same on a my 04 WRX, de catted the up pipe. bought the 2.2ohm resistor fitted it into the plug, still had the cel. took it to subaru cel was the egt, tried a new resistor same thing . bought a pack of resistors thinking bigger resistor would work and also bought a multimeter. checked the original resistor and it was not 2.2ohm Maplins had given me the wrong ones. tried a couple in the pack i bought and found the 2.2ohm one ,fitted it, 5 starts cel gone and didnt come back on and have now sold the car. still got some resistors in the cupboard if you need one.

Thanks for the help as ever SN is about give and take and I was wondering what I could swap it for..how about a bottle of NF octane booster

Hi, When you get it (or before you send it) could you either describe the markings or take a quick photo. Resistors are colour coded with stripes and I'll be able to work out (ok ask my electronics m8) what rating it is.

Markings are in stripes like red/red/red.. gold etc.

Cheers
Martin.

i have recently done mine for the same fault.

i got a 2.2kohm 3watt resistor from maplins cant remember name of it but it was not conventional type,it was a white block type with no coloured stripes?

i cut the cable off egt and soldered it to the wires close to the plug and wrapped in insulation tape before plugging back in by suspension turret

i also found the cel would not clear until it was reset properly, not even after having battery off overnight, had no problems since

just looked on maplins it was a w2k2 resistor

That colour code is a wierd resistance rating for the job lol

It sounds like a 5band (with it having 5 bands lol) so... = 115 ohms, +/-2%

5 Band calculator : Resistor Code Calculator - Colours to Value
4 Band calculator : Graphical Resistance Calculator

Red/Red/Red/Brown would be 2220 ohms, last band is the tolerance

Why not just put the EGT sensor in the top of the downpipe?

I would prefer to relocate the EGT, but was quoted around 200quid to remove the downpipe, weld in the boss and refit which at the moment I can't afford on top of what I've spent so far this year.

tested them on my multimeter and it registered 2.2ohms although i am not an electronics wizard.it worked on my egt sensor anyway . have sent a couple to Midlife, see if it works.

It's not the rate, it's the amount of time they quoted that bumps it up so high. If you know where I can get it done at a LADS rate please let me know.

CEL light is now off.

From Maplin : M2K2 - 2.2K Ohm resistor. Metal Film 0.6w 13 pence
Ignition on/off a few times. Started engine and CEL is off. Been 70 miles on motorway without any problems.

I suspect a higher watt rated 2.2k resistor would also do fine.

Plugged into socket left open when EGT sensor was removed. Socket is just under black removable cover just in front of drivers side suspension top.

Is there anyone who does the cel fix with a plug adaptor ie plug with 2k2 resistor which plugs straight into the socket.
