Anyone removed there speedo cable from the side of the gearbox recently. I had a look under the car yesterday with a mate and it seems that you can't get enough movement on the spanner to remove the nut that holds the cable in the side of the gearbox. The only way we can see is to remove the downpipe to give us more room. I need to replace the cable as the bottom part of the speedo cable has snapped.
Thanks

You dont need to remove the dp to get the speedo cable off the gearbox.
I jacked the drivers side of the car up & removed the cable from underneath.
Pull the orange rubber protective cover on the cable to reveal a 17mm plastic hex nut. Its either 17 or 19mm.

Nice one guys will try this at the weekend. Didn't fancy un-bolting the downpipe as it has been there since 1994 and it may have been a tad stubborn towards coming off.

Bad news guy's attempted to remove the cable from the gear box yesterday. The plastic nut snapped as i have heard is quite common. The problem is now that there is only about 2 threads sticking out of the side of the gearbox and its so tight under there that i can't get grip on the threads at all. Where do i go from here? I may try removing the downpipe although i am not sure if i will still have enough room to get it out now. Someone suggested taking the gearbox out but surely it can't come to that.
Any advice would be much appreciated guy's.
