Default VF29 or VF35

Before anyone mentions it I have done a search! but I am looking for experience.

MY99 uk car is booked in soon for some work doing with a well known tuner, my question is which would be better for 320bhp, VF29 or VF35, looking for the fastest spool, I have read all the NASOC threads on Turbo's, was just wondering if there was anyone with experience of both turbos.

This was inspired by NS04's write up.

Looking for fastest spool and midrange torque over top end power. Or will they be about the same?

Supporting mods will be:

STI 8 Intercooler
Full decat
Walbro
3 port boost solenoid
Full turbo and induction hoses
Panel filter
Ported Headers
Ecutek Tek 3

Personally having driven cars with about that level of performance on all 3 turbo's my preffered one would be the Hybrid TD04....Andy F can help out here with a price...

You'll get the best with the VF35, with suitably amended boost control plumbing it will provide more punch than the hybrid. TD04 hybrid is good but lacks the same ugency in the specific areas you are interested in.

cheers

Hi Mate,

Blimey, I've inspired someone!! I should really point out that it was speaing to David at APi, Andy Fand Bob Rawle that really determined my spec

I was thinking about the TD04 hybrid too, but I wanted punch over spool (neither is a slow spooling turbo after all) and everyone I spoke to said if that was the aim, the VF was the better choice.

Mine was mapped by Bob and I was immediately impressed with how much more "guts" there was everywhere. It spools a bit later than the TD04, but once it's at its threshold, the boost comes in about as quick as the std TD04 I'd say.

It's a noisy bugger, but all the more endearing for it.

Very good turbo at this level of tune, I'd say.

Actually had a mate's dad in the car the other day and he asked me to put my foot down in 3rd to "see what these 'rice rockets' could do".

"Blimey, she shifts nicely doesn't she?" was the reply.

Praise indeed from someone who owns a Porsche C4

Mines booked in with David at API and being mapped by Pat on the same day, just need to decide on the turbo, but I don't really think there is much in it.

The reason I am asking is if I want to get bigger injectors in the future and up the power, will the VF29 be maxed out?

How does the VF29 compare to the VF35 Bob?

I know someone who has 340x330 with a VF35

Not sure about the VF29 (I'm sure Bob/David/Pat could advise). IIRC The VF 29-35 turbos all run to *about* the same kind of level; If you wanted to go significantly more i.e. 350+ bhp then you'll need to look into a larger turbo, maybe a TD05 18G or similar.

Have a word with your mapper though
