Default cold air feed on a 04 STI

I need to set up a cold air feed in to my engine bay in readiness for a trip to Bob R in a couple of weeks.

I’ve bought a set of Chargespeed brake ducts to replace the standard front fog covers but when I took the covers off to work out a route for the feed I found this in the drivers side:

Does anyone know what the box is blocking the gap? The nearside looks like this:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s/DSC00060.jpg

Also does anyone have any useful tips for completing this. i.e. what piping is best to use and what is the best method to get the piping in and fixed?

I just completed my cold air feed yesterday. lOOks the dd's. And not too noticeable as i had the ram colour coded.

I opted for the Pipercross route, which comes complete with rams, piping, clips and zip-clips.

(you only need half the kit, so half i'm going to pass on/sell).

You've a JDM, so i don't know about that part, but when i had the APS CAK fitted, there were plasticy parts in the boot, snorkel i think.

This is quite simple! Either you have removed the airbox and inner wing snorkel to fit a Cold Air Induction kit or not.....

If you are running with the OEM airbox you are looking at the snorkel...

This is mine - dont forget to mesh it otherwise half the countryside will be in the bottom of your airbox

89 mm ID piping
bonded using Duct Tape - it is easier than the bonding collars and works fine 8)

Wheel off, remove inner wing lining (loads of different style clips ) remove snorkle & re assemble with something like Duncan above has done.

You can do it with the wheel on... it is tight but possible.

1. Turn steering to full lock (not much i know)
2. unclip the inner wheel arhc liner slidey clip and two clips to the front of the liner.
3. unclip the liner from the bottom of the front bumper.
4. take off snorkle from the engine bay.
5. this will reveal a 10mm nut that holds one part of the elbow/resonator box and the other is towards the top of the airbox - undo these and tease the resonator out of the gap in the liner.
6. feed the ducting straight through the hole behind the fog light to the input of the airbox. It should fit stright in. If not hacksaw the 90 degree angle from the resonator to make it easier.

Instant cold air

Just be careful going through deep puddles

If you are concerned about the warranty dont do it

Intake Temps are down about 3 degrees and suffers a lot less from sitting idling.
Air flow is a fair amount higher although probably not noticeable to the butt dyno. With supporting mods it helps a lot.

I already had the snorkel removed, but drilled the hole in the fog cover prior to mapping, so it was accurate as it could be, to the normal setup.

yes - I kept original filter box but some people use this as a way of feeding cold air to an induction kit.

There isnt an off the shelf kit for it but really you can buy the fog light surrounds from subaru for about £40 and some ducting and 30 mins later it is done.

Bob Rawle usually likes some more cold air in the engine bay only if you have an aftermarket induction kit fitted.

I thought the OEM induction was pretty good

Does Bob think you have an induction kit under the bonnet? Just curious.

If your running a std airbox on a newage then it has a cold air feed anyway. That is the black piece of plastic taking air from the front next to the drivers side headlamp. I would imagine this air is just as cold as the air coming from the wing. So IMHO i would not touch.

If you have an induction kit then bin the plastic feed and resonator in the wing and put some ducting in place feeding to your induction kit. Or if the induction kit fits with the plastic OEM air feed leave it in situ as it goes into the wing and comes straight back out where an induction kit would sit so providing a cold air feed. That of course of there is still space.

HTH.

not so - this will be grabbing some hot air from the radiator area.

the facts are for mine are that it went from 4 degrees above ambient at cruise to 1 degree above ambient at cruise... 3 degree improvement in temps and therefore denser air charge => more power

Pippyrips

Is there enough room to get a 2.5 / 3 inch pipe from the brake duct into the engine bay with the OEM kit in place ?

I'd have thought you would have had to remove the OEM stuff, fit the RCMS induction and *then* fit the cold air pipework from the foglight ?

Or you could buy the Pipercross kit for £25 all in.

bobs response:
remove the "bladder" from the inner wing, then you can fit the
air feed pipe, the airbox is able to stay in place and when swapped over the
cold air feed is ready. Of course you can drive the car, just keep it off
boost.

Happy days

Can you get ducting with different diameters at each end? I need one end to be 65mm to match the brake ducting entry point but would prefer something near 100mm at the filter end.
