Default overheating - help needed!

Hi ,

I changed the rad hose today for a nice blue hardrace one on my02 bugeye but had a problem on the way home!

As I come to some traffic lights I noticed alot of steam coming from the engine, as first i thought it was just some excess water that i spilled that came from the rad just burning off but looking at the temp gauge it rising and rising untill it hit the top so i pulley over,

As i lifted the bonnet alot off steam come flying out... so i left the car where it was . I went home and left it for a couple of hours. Just been back to pick it up and topped up the rad with some water im still getting lots off steam,

Looking under the bonnet again there is a squeaking noise coming from the crank pulley, and the rad fans arn't working.. i have checked the hose and that is all connected fine

any help would be great!

cheers chris

what about the fans? are they only meant to kick in at a certain temp?

Yes. As for the air-lock, it takes a good while to get rid of any trapped air.
Run the car with the expansion tank cap off. Then gently squeeze the top rad hose to help circulate the coolant. Every now and then, a bubble should come to the top and the coolant level drop.
Also, remember that the coolant system on an Impreza takes around 7 liters. How much did you put in when you changed the rad?
If this doesn't help, try the thermostat as it may be stuck closed.

Do Impreza radiators have bleed valves on them to let the air out? I know my Peugeot did.

Its also a good idea to have the heater inside the car turned to HOT so that no air is trapped in the internal heater matrix.
