Default fitting a new engine

Well now I am thinking about fitting a new engine to my classic. After getting prices for a rebuild...this is the way I am thinking about going. Was thinking about buying a jap import engine so my question is...
What is involved...basically...and what should I look out for....eg..types of engine...do I need exactly the same or can I fit one off another model and do you think this is a worthwhile way to go?
Thanks
Paul

You would be best just swapping the short motor (Bottom End) over and using your existing heads and manifolds.

This way you can use any 2.0 short motor right upto the the latest model. But you will have to get the right head gaskets - Someone like API David would be able to help you with them though.

I'm not sure i understand what you mean but i'll have a crack at answering you.

"Spit" was asking a question about replacing his engine, as his current engine requires a rebuild (Presumably Crack/Bearing/Piston/Sleeve Damage)

These are all damaged parts that are in the short motor. Now the average cost of getting this repaired would be circa £2.5k, The average price of a good second hand short motor is £500.

So there is a good saving to be had just be taking the risk on a used working short motor and attaching his existing heads and manifolds to it, which should be fine after they've been cleaned up.
