Reset ECU or remap

Reset ECU or remap
I have a standard JDM WRX 2001 bugeye which supposedly has 250bhp, although I'm pretty sure it does not make all the horses it should as I run it on any 'super' petrol that's handy.
Although I use octane booster when on track (3/4 times year) to prevent trouble, I'm not sure the ECU adjusts back to full boost for the couple of tanks of fuel I use on the day.
Should I:
1. Reset the ECU the day before a trackday and get some benefit when I need it the most, and carry on using any old super in the interim? If so how do I do it and what are the gains likely to be?
or
2. Change the back box for a Sti box, change the air filter (not sure for what) and get a remap. If so what can I expect in terms of bhp?
My credibility is at stake here, last time I was at Bedford I could only just get away from mates in a Honda S2000 and a Skoda Octavia vRS (albeit a very well driven one - 220bhp I believe).
Any help/ experience gratefully received.
