Try a different dealer and don't sell the car.
Sounds like they want to do the expensive fix and take off the inlet manifold, just to find that the external actuator motor has failed. Result will be 4 hours labour plus cost of a new actuator.

Take it to someone who can interrogate ECU to see what the tumbler valve throttle position and motor are up to.
If the motor has failed then source one from a breaker. The motor can be replaced in less than 1 hour.

Yes the subaru dealer said they need to take inlet manifold off etc to get to the valve! I live in scarborough north yorkshire no decent impreza specialists around here unless you guys could name a few? I dont want to spend 4 hours labour plus another 4 hours labour plus valve etc seems too expensive to me?

Like i say the car drives amazing its just on tickover idling that the engine shakes a bit, anyone got any ideas, very rare problem they said only heard of two cars ever at their garage with a tumbler valve gone on not working?

Was the poor idle the only thing that made you take the car in or did the check engine light come on?

Ask them to swap over the current actuator with one off another car - clear the ECU and carry out a cold start. At most it is 1 hours work.

The engine light wont go off, the poor idle is improving with driving however i dont want to damage car? smelt of petrol initially but that seems to have gone too? Someone told me to drive it and the tumbler valve may come unstuck i am driving under 5000rpm just in case though? 700 miles or so then if not unstuck investigate further?

Its a bizarre problem that other than light on dash you would not even notice?
My fifth scooby and i think ive bought a bad one?

How much is a 2002 wrx saloon worth these days?

this is what you tgv looks like, yor inlet manifold bolts on top and these bolt to your heads - the motor attaches to the side,

P1090 -- Tumble generator valve #1 (RH) malfunction (stuck open)

P1091 -- Tumble generator valve #1 (RH) malfunction (stuck close)

P1092 -- Tumble generator valve #2 (LH) malfunction (stuck open)

P1093 -- Tumble generator valve #2 (LH) malfunction (stuck close)

your cel code will be one of the above i gusess

if it is stuck closed i would not ride about in the car to much as you can see it will block air getting to those 2 cylinders making it run rich.

suck open, wouldn't both me at all

now what Butty is saying is whats the chances of the the valve getting stuck compared to the motor !

its a very simple job to remove the motor if you fancy doing it your self

the only reason why i could see the garage wanting to remove the manifold is to make sure nothing has come a miss inside - you wouldn't want anything dropping inside the heads but take a look at the picture again and see what you think

Had this happening to mine (ī02 WRX), Right tumbler valve stuck closed. CEL on and engine running poorly. Took it to Subaru dealer who put on the diagnostic tool. You can work it loose again if you take away the cover to the tumbler motor and carefully try to turn/knock on the axle. You must determine which side is stuck. Later on I removed the tumbler system incl. walls in the tumblerhouses and the valves themselves and I also cut away one half of the axel all giving much better airflow. Full instructions on the american Scooby site, donīt remember the name.

So you guys reckon its worth doing then as the subaru dealer seems to think 1000 pounds is nothing one of the valves is stuck but they didnt say which one?
If it did become unstuck by chance the light wouldnt go off would it? The car is running near perfect on idle now? I only do 50 miles a week if that, it would take me a while to clock 700 miles you see?
I put tumbler valve in google and saw a valve for 500$ brand new shipped from america.
Seems you guys know much more than my subaru main dealers here!

Definetley valve stuck not motor!

IF the valve has gone unstuck by itself ( lucky you then) the CEL will disappear when engine is started 5 times. You donīt have to by any parts, itīs simply a matter of working it loose again. The right hand side motor is at the back of the engine, near the turbo and damn fiddly to work at, and the left one is at the front of the engine near the aircon. Perhaps someone can post some pics.
