front mounted intercooler

FMIC
I just finished fitting one last weekend.
My experience:
Flat 4 online FMIC kit
Had to cut inner wing with angle grinder, also either side of the FMIC to allow for pipework.
Its all quite tight but got there in the end.
Also had to cut the top pipe as it would not reach. so has a 63mm pipe join by the battery, maybe a good thing for insulation.
The kit doesn't come with the reducer for the DV.
The longest time was spent cutting the front bumper, offering it up again, cutting it again, offering it up, and so on and so on
the odd expletive here and there but otherwise not too bad.

Am half way through mine (1993 WRX). Bought it from the GB currently running.
Similar to Claaarkio my main problems have been:
Cutting hole in driver wing in correct place
Pipe from inlet to just above cam cover is not long enough by about 1/2 inch
Either side of FMIC needs cutting to make room for pipework
No reducer supplied for DV
Still having a massive problem getting the pipe from the intercooler passengerside in between the rad and cam cover without being right up tight against the rad. I think its a tight fit anyway but my car has had a small crunch on that side and I think the rads about .5cm out of line causing me major grief.
Not cut bumper yet. Currently has 2 afternoons (2pm - 6pm) worth of work in it. Managed to get it all together, but its not quite all snug yet (few of the silicon hoses are clamped as close to the end of the pipes as possible on the intercooler which isn't good enough)
Hard job, but worth it for the looks alone!!

you two last guys sound like you had the same problem we had when we had our fmic fitted and we also brought ours off flat4online. i don't think they liked me much when i contacted them to ask them what the hell they were playing at. turns out the intercooler itself is the right one for our car, which is a my95, but the pipes are for a 96!!!!!!!!!!

I think that all classic FMIC are made for 1996> impreza's. These use the existing hole in the drivers wing and I think theres a little more room on the passenger side around the oil/battery area. Mine actually sayd 1996> on the package.

Yeah the squeeze inbetween the rad and the belt cover is tight!
The fan blades clipped the pipe on the first run. but managed to move it enough and retighten jubalee clips to pull it out of the way!!
Indeed does look awesome when finished!! we have also moved the numberplate to be offset, like an evo.

Yep, the cheaper kits sold on line are all the same from MY92-00. The more expensive kits such are HKS are made in either pre97, 98-98 or 99-00 and fit perfectly.... you pays your money.
To fit the cheap kits on a pre97 you have cut the inner wing (post97s have the holes already there) and due to the change in inlet manifold the throttle sits closer to the bulk head on pre97s, therefore the pipe to this seems short. No major work if you are handly with a grinder
Tony.
