All i know is the early import ecus had a spare slot that you can put a chip in (bottom rh corner)

Best bet is to open it up

I'm guessing the same place as imports which is under the passenger footwell.
On mine (93wrx) remove the plastic sill and the plastic clips which hold it in place, pull back the carpet and there is a metal plate, remove it and the ecu should be underneath it with a letter/number code (eg mine says U8).

The MY99 ECU contains flash memory instead of a separate EPROM, so unfortunately it is not possible to tell if it has been modified by simply opening up the ECU.

You need to get hold of a cable that will plug into the OBDII port (just under the steering wheel) and read the memory contents from the ECU to determine if it has been chipped.
