safe to turn
if i align th crankshaft keyway to 6 oclock position will that move the pistons clear so i can align camshafts prior to fitting a new belt. i didnt line everything up before i took off the old one now i have read about valve interference with not only pistons but with each other too! any clues as to how to tackle this one?

did the cam sprockets move when you removed the belt?
you could refit and line them up.. a couple of teeth should be find between crank and camshafts.. but like you say you must be careful with camshafts..
in the manual there is a diagram explaining which way to rotate them to avoid colision.. manual can be downloaded from Main Heading Goes Here
however if the cams are off cam.. you are okay but you won't know they are off cam without rotating them and if on cam they will spring.. and it would be possible to do damage at that point..
I would refit belt in the position they are just try and keep cams the right orientation
