Default Help Big end

Hi Guy's

Big end has gone on my 53 plate WRX @ 33,000 mls. Just had 30K service, full history but is a parallel import. I have a few questions and if any of you can help I would be most grateful. Basically Sh**ting myself about the cost.

What is the chance of getting this under warrenty?

If it isn't covered rough Idea of repair cost

Would it be worth dropping in Sti8/9 engine in and cost?

I know this is a lot of questions, but really unsure what to do

cheers

jim

What was the cause of the failure? How much oil was in the car?

Not unheard of for Subaru dealers to service a car only to have it suffer terminal engine failure very shortly after, and for the owner to be told

"Sorry sir, some of em just do that....nothing to do with our service"

They don't "just do that"

If you have a warranty I'd be pressing very hard for the dealer to foot the bill. If not, then I'm afraid you're going to have to pay. DO NOT get it done at the dealer!! VERY expensive!

Go to an independent Subaru specialist and get it done there. The work is often of a higher standard and the cost significantly less.

I'd be having a word with David at APi if I were you. Very good advice even if you don't get the work done there! And they will do a PROPER job if you do!

I'm afraid this will be a big bill. Figure on about 2.5k for a proper rebuild. I'd be inclined to avoid dropping a replacement engine in there, unless you can be VERY sure of its history.

With a job like this get it done properly and pay once!!! Too many take short cuts to save money and only end up having to pay someone else to do the job properly a second time!

All the best,

Ns04

ive read about other makes of cars including subarus that the manufacturer as a goodwill gesture as given a substantial discount on repairs due to the circumstances...low mileage..regular services as per schedule.Try a subaru dealer first to see if he will act on your behalf or contact subaru direct
I presume you have had the big end failure confirmed?

thanks for the advice guys,

Car has just been serviced by prosport in stockport, been really impressed with them and I don't think they can really be held in anyway responsible - however if anyone feels differently please let me know.

Still waiting for costs to come in, they are an authorised repair centre so assume they will be more expensive than sending it to someone like scoobymania who I have also had advice from. I must admit that despite Ns04's very sensible advice I am very tempted to drop an Sti8 engine in. After making some calls I think I could pick one up for circa £1500 then say 10-15hrs labour would come in @ £2500 ish, the same as having my existing one repaired. At least then i would get some extra performance for my cash.

If I did find an engine would i have to change wiring looms, Raditors, TMIC as well as intercoolers and turbo's?

in essence I am really gutted, had just had it valeted and was preparing to sell it to get a STI now my extra cash is going to have to go on fixing this one! still missus didn't really want a christmas present

you wouldnt get extra performance for your cash. To get the extra performance from the engine would mean that you would need an ecutek remap which will set up the correct fuelling for the engine, up the boost levels etc. Add in about £500+ for this.
