Default health check

my subaru 96 v3 wrx is playing up. its hicking and farting on a damp morning when i first start it, once warmed up ok, apart from a little hick now and then. more so as it hits 5rpm just one hick. ive had it serviced the usuall plugs oil etc. had it to my local mechanic to check the coil pack and thats fine. he says it could be the dump valve (forge) but im not sure? any one out there no this problem and how to sort it

It could be the insulation of the HT leads breaking down (if your version has them). If possible get someone to start it in the dark whilst you look in the engine bay you might be able to see some arcing from the HT leads
