Default 95 WRX with FMIC, what induction kit?

Hi there i wondered if you might be able to help, My brother is about to Fit a FMIC kit from Flat4online.co.uk, i understand that you need to replace the standard air box with a cone to allow enough space for the pipe work, given that this is the case what induction kits do people recommend to work well in this situation ?

Kind regards

Dave

The best ones to get are ones that aren't oiled (Apexi and K+N)

Why is this? normally the oiled filters do a better job at filtering, granted they need to be cleaned more, so why is it different on a scooby engine ?

Does the IC pipework need modding in anyway?? I thought the kits were for 97-00 models??

I've got a K+N 57i on mine, works well and fits ok with the hybrid.

There are quite a few fitting guides for the hybrid on here, search the projects forum

I understand an extra bit of piping is required to fit the earlier classic models, we will sort that when we get to it.

So you are using an oiled filter and this works ok?

what is it with the oiled ones that makes people say they are no good for scoobys ?

I got mine from Jolly Green Monster (Simon) on here. Shouldn't cost more than about £140 new.

I've ran K+N filters on all my scoobs for years without any probs, all of them pre MY97 with the stronger MAF. The MAFs that aren't IK friendly are those from the MY99-00 - even then the K+N is well regarded as MAF friendly on these models.

So you're saying that oil'd filters are fine on the older scoobys ?

seems alot of confusion over this matter, alot of people saying one thing and lots saying the opposite, has there been any actual failures from oil'd filters?

I'm saying that K+N filters are fine. In my opinion.

Other filters, be they oiled or not, may or may not be good.

Flat4 do a package FMIC with the Apexi which works out a lot cheaper than buying them seperatley.

It is confusing isn't it?! As long ago as 1996 or so I read an article in Max Power (sorry) where a group of induction kits were tested. The winner in that test was the K and N which if I remember correctly gave a nigh on twenty bhp gain! The car was an Astra Gsi 16 valver with an exhaust and three bar MAP sensor.

Why would a N/A engine have a three bar map sensor

Its not very effective sitting on the garage floor due to the FMIC pipework being in the way

I wasn't in anyway saying that you were going to get those sort of power gains. What I was hoping to show was that you can get good airflow with excellent filtration. The fact that the Apexi didn't skimp on filtration ability and still produced good power is a testament to it's design and value for money. All to often, I see people with "bling bling" airfilters like the Blitz SUS because they've seen them in Max Power, Fast Car etc. I have no bling on my car, everything has a function
