Unhappy heater controls not fully working...

As per title, my heater controls dont fully work, if I turn it on full it blows full but if I reduce the speed setting it only works in certain stages and if I turn it off it is on the equivalent of auto. The unit is obviously faulty as it does click on the various settings (the one's that work that is) so I will need to replace it. How hard of a job is this to do? is it a dash out job?

Car is a MY93 wrx

Cheers

yes I am on about the dials. I take it its not the heater matrix then as I have read that that is a dash out job?
