Default Bugeye ecu remap?

Hi

I'm a newie with a standard wrx 01 (215bhp). It has the standard twin exhaust. Will giving it an ecu remap make me go even faster? (i dont really want a loud sound, thats why im considering a chip!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

your could try keeping the standard backbox and getting rid of the cats \ adding a sports cat - this won't add much volume at all

then get a remap

Yes it will- but not by much! To really benefit from a remap, you'll need to do something about the very restrictive cats in the exhaust. A single sports cat in the down pipe is adequate to satisfy emmision regulations and removing the other cats, in conjunction with a remap, will result in a very significant improvement in the car's power and drivability. You can retain the std backbox if you wish, but do bare in mind that not all aftermarket ones are loud. You can get the Prodrive one, or one from Revolution or Magnex, none of which are OTT.

Stay away from any "chipping" of the ECU, Ecutek remap by a respected tuner is the only way to go.

I have an 01 WRX and did a bit less than is suggested here, although what NewScoob suggests is good.

I wanted to save cash and keep /didn't want to bother with exhaust swaps at MOT time. The car had a Prodrive WR backbox when I bought it 3 months ago, so I just fitted a 2 piece decat centre pipe/deresonated exhaust section and had a remap done 6 weeks ago.

The result - 273bhp on Optimax after Andy F remap and a car which (to me) feels genuinely quick rather than having good "hot hatch" performance.
The car's lots of fun and I must admit I keep blipping the throttle because it's such a laugh ! (I now have a radar detector ).

By the way, if you're going to uprate the performance I'd strongly recommend
supension mods too ~ I fitted Whiteline ARB and droplinks plus Prodrive springs. The car is now far superior to the vehicle I bought 3 months ago.

Hope these posts give you some ideas,

Andy Mc

Hi Andy and all

Thanks for that, if you take out the cat's will it still pass the MOT and be legal?

Also what remap did you get?

I'm considering PPP to be safe?

No, if you remove all the cats it will fail the MOT, best to put a sports one in the Down Pipe. You should get a remap from a respected specialist, who depends largely on where you're from and how far you're willing to travel. The only reason to go for PPP is warranty. A PPP is an generic map; some cars go very well on it, others don't respond so well. A custom map is the way IMHO.

I beg to differ, EcuTek is only the tool used to re-map the OEM ECU of which there are now a number of tools with the same functionality.

Forget PPP on a car that's out of warranty, waste of money IMHO. Yes you'll keep slightly more of the residual value but not enough to make much difference on a car that's probably 5-7 years old when you sell it on.

ECUTEK is the only way to go in terms of value for money, providing it's done by a reputable person/company.

Scoobs with PPP often fail to achieve the claimed max figures quoted in the literature, often only making gains of around 25-35bhp over the standard bhp. This is a poor return on £1400-£1600 if you ask me.
