Default Safe oil Temps

Hi Guys,

I've established that the engine oil i'm using is ok to 150c / 302f, but am unsure as to the safe working temp of the engine.

Am currently experiencing 115c / 240f (ish) regularly on track.

Any info would be great.
Simon

ps. thanks to Guy oilman for the oil specs

Round the 100-110 mark is about right.

But bear in mind it depends where your temp sensor is located to dictate what is safe...

I.e a sensor in the sump plug does not accurately reflect the temperature of the oil in the feed galleries.

Its apparently in the sump at the moment, my man is going to move it to the top of no 3 this afternoon.

He reckons there's a possibility that it will read hotter, although less accurately, in the sump?

I would have thought in the sump it would be reading cooler as there is more air flow around there?

been told you don't want to go over 115 degrees to be safe, 130 degrees C will be more than enough to damage the engine (thats based on standard block pistons etc) the defi's in mine ae set to warn about 108 (bit of a wuss when it come to mechanical stuff so tend to play it very safe in myown car)

I asume you are using top quality oil.

Using pro R 15/50 silkolene, i was getting up to 115 on track at the weekend. At that point i parked it and let it cool down.

I did suffer a big end failure previously at 120 deg on mobil 1

Sensor wants to be positioned in the main gallery, not in the sump where its coolest.
