Default scooby problems

Hi i have just been round to one of my mates houses to give him a hand with his scoob.
When it first starts after being left over night it kicks out a cloud of grey smoke but then clears straight away??
I thought this was a sign of running to rich but as it clears straight away it left me confused. When we went out for a drive it seems to stutter every now and again when given hard throttle and does not seem to want to rev all the way throught the rev range..
Anyone have any ideas of what this could be.
We have tried 2 maf sensors in it, they are both second hand though. We also changed the idle control valve as it apparently started idleing to high at times.
After changing the idle control valve and the maf the idle problem seemed to go away although the car still did not seem to want to rev all the way through??
I am really confused. Can anyone give me any ideas of what could be wrong. All help appreciated.

If you disconnect the battery and turn the stereo on or use the electrics to drain all the power from the car. Leave it about 45mins to an hour, then reconnect the battery that will have reset your ecu m8. Not to sure about the smoke though, sounds like a turbo prob to me maybe a leaky bearing on the turbo letting a bit of oil in the zorst?
