Default Apexi vs other ECUs....

Whats the advantage of say using an Apexi ECU compared with say an ECUTEK remap or GEMS?

As you can tell from the answer i have no idea!

Actually, the ECUTEK is the cheapest option, however is only suitable for MY99 onwards cars. Older models can use Gems/Link/Hydra/Motec etc however the Apexi ECU is usually cheaper than those and a bit more user friendly.

It doesn't have features such as Anti-lag, but depending on your goals that shouldn't be a problem. PLenty of mappers around for the Apexi too.

Hmm i like the idea of the switchable maps that come with the Apexi commander. But is it a true re-map or a piggy back system?

The Apexi is a full stand-alone management system that replaces your current ecu, i.e. your standard ecu is removed and the apexi installed in its place. The unit is then mapped to suit and can be adjusted as required. Not sure about switchable maps, someone with more knowledge can comment on that, but it is certainly easy enough to pull back the timing if you're struggling to get good fuel, and various boost setting scan be had with the boost kit.

powerFC saved my engine when my maf failed!
PowerFC doesnt correct or learn values for failing sensors.
PowerFC doesnt have a diagnostics function.
PowerFC is tweakable via the hand controller (commander) unit.

everything else sucks and blows at the same time

I believe there are more differences as well such as more granular mapping and the amount of boost they can "see" etc.. you would need comment from a mapper though as I am doing the scoobynet recycling other stuff I have read on here thing so I could be talking complete crap.

my choice was simple - needed to map my 98 WRX, so got an Apexi cos nothing else I could find at the time could do the job. Also the commander has 4 boost settings saving the bother of a separate controller. I literally can press a couple of buttons as I'm driving along and switch from 0.8 bar minimum setting to 1.4 bar maximum. No detonation control though, which I'm not that keen on. Very clever in some areas but perhaps doesn't have ALL those little extras which make it all singing and all dancing e.g. inlet temp compensation, detonation control etc.

If its good enough for the fastest scoob in the u.k, its good enough for me! Add on an avc-r for boost control.

its the lack of correction in the powerFC that saved my engine.
Things show up as being wrong straightaway, rather than compensating and goping completely ****-up

You might want to consider the SIGMA ECU from TEG sport Lancaster

24 x 24 Fuel and ign maps
3D boost map (RPM -v- Throttle) - no need for separate boost controller
Individual cylinder trims for Fuel and Ignition
0.25 degrees ignition resolution
0.01 msec fuel pulse resolution
Charge temperature ignition and fuel correction tables
MAP based load calculation - MAF not required
User configurable Pressure and RPM breakpoints
User configurable MAP sensor (OEM, Delco, Bosch etc)
2 switchable fuel, ignition and boost maps
Closed loop lambda
Closed loop idle control
A/C supported with auto shut off above defined throttle angle
32 bit processor
Live mapping
Advanced graphics with rotatable 3d maps and live cursor on all tables and graphs
Gear shift light - uses CEL
Fuel and ignition based rev limiters
ALS with air bypass valve only or Jacked open throttle + ABV operation
3D Ign retard, fuel cut and spark cut for ALS

Price installed and mapped on Dyno dynamics 4WD rolling road is £995 + VAT.

We've developed the SIGMA for MY93-MY98 only.Still do GEMS for MY99 onwards.Have never supplied APEXI and don't intend to do so - but do re-maps if asked.Harvey can fill you in on relative performance gains of SIGMA -v Apexi -v -Link as we have back to back tested these ECU's on his WRX.
