Default Will this spec see 400bhp?

The warrenty has now expired on my MY03 WRX so I'm now planning some serious power. I'd really love to break the 400bhp barrier (at least just for dyno bragging then run lower boost everyday to save gearbox) but need some advice on few things first.

So far I've sourced a TD05/06-20G, 800cc injectors (a bit overkill I know but they were cheap) and this large Hyperflow TMIC.....

Does anyone have any experiance of these top mounts? The manufacturer claims 400plus but I'd prefer some definite UK results. I was given it for testing so I thought I'd give it whirl but if its definitly not going perform I'll save trying and go for a FMIC.

I've got a Walbro 255... is this up to the job?

and an open downpipe.

That leaves headers... are ported headers still ok for this kind of power as I want to do everything possible to improve spool up?

Also what clutch is recomended for this sort of power?

I realise there are lots of questions but all help appreaciated.

I dont think you will achieve 400 on a WRX and the boost that it will be mapped at with that turbo anyway, more like 370/380.

Dont bother messing around with a TMIC at that level, just fit a frount mount. I dont have personal experience of that particular IC but have read that they are no better than a version 8 STI item.

I do have personal experience of a STI8 one at 400 BHP and they are not up to the job for any length of time.

Read WRX Rich's thread in projects as he has done exactly what you are trying and got about 386 BHP IIRC.

Like mark says i think you would fall short of 400 because of a few areas.

If your block is still standard then you probably wont want to run more than 1.45-1.5bar boost on it (assuming you want it to last more than a few miles)

I presume the exhaust is all 3 inch?

I have some ported headers for sale tubular headers are what you "need" for this though

An Exedy performance organic would be ok at this level, its what im using currently, and it seems very good (currently 360lbft, soon to be 400+)

Id say that a few people have achieved 400 on a TD05/06 20g, but literally a few, and even then have probably got a fuel additive in there somewhere.

Also as mark says, FMIC is the only way to go.

TD05/06 will do 400bhp. 440bhp i think is Andy F with fuel additives. Stick some optimax and should do 420bhp

Walbro will be fine for 400bhp

TMIC pass. Only TMIC seen do good power was Andy F one btu that was a monster

i have the same TMIC on my JDM sti , the tmic is fine but my injectors are maxed out and so is my hybrid turbo !! as for your clutch im still on standard 6 speed one and i dont have any issues, if you want to break the 400bhp mark on those mods i would suggest race fuel for when you put your car on the rollers

You need more parts to find the 400+ you want.

a good ecu/mapper!
Tube headers
Parallel fuel ines (for reliability)
Breather mod as above reason
3'' decat
Forget the TMIC, go Hybrid
AP organic clutch will be fine

To balance the thoughts above

I once hit 407 bhp with:

Stock Sti v3 engine
V8 TMIC
550cc injectors/walbrow/parallel mod/breather mod
Optimax with max NF booster
20g from AndyF ported beautifully
Apexi and AndyF map @ 1.5 bar max
Grouppe S headers and helix up-pipe
3'' decat

Now have a Hybrid FMIC (so much better) Piper Cone filter

I think this engine is a real 380 bhp/360 lbft and is ballistic.
Note the internals are STOCK.

Thinking of an 18g for Xmas.

Graham.

what rollers do you want 400 bhp on

i swapped my aps tmic for a aps fmic if it makes any differnce,

im still on the oem clutch but seem to be eating goodyears and loosing no more oil than before after 6k miles of weekend abuse, as the car is not a daily driver

i don't know of any newage wrx ( not belonging to a business) on scoobynet with std internals that reliably gets 400 bhp... its not easy i ve seen a few 20g's get closer to 360 than 400, but then again its not all about turbo

but there are a few classics

me.... next rolling road day will be up north, just for some free horses

407 bhp = Well Lane on a very cold damp day.

379 bhp = Powerstation on a hot dry summer day.

I believe the latter.

Didn't John Banks get over 400 on a uk engine? Not sure if it was with the 20g or the Ion turbo though.

But I doubt his maps and fuel would be in a 'customer' car!

NO, Save your money and uprate your brakes/suspension first, then you may just find out just how quick your car really is.

Good luck.

Many thanks for all the comments guys.

You have given me much food for thought.

Think I'll just forget about reaching a magic figure and see what I can get on the top mount. If 911 had over 400 on a V8 STI TMIC then I'm sure mine won't be the one item stopping me close.

The top mount pictured (type) is not as good as a New Age Sti jobby and would be a limiting factor, they are a false investment in my view, spend it on a FMIC. The 20G will struggle to get you much past 380 (if that) on pump fuel, the GT30 hybrids are a better bet from my recent experiences. (MD321* from Lateral for example). You should use tubular headers for the mid-top end, mapping should take care of the spool depending on the turbo, fuel pump will be fine, don't forget injectors. You shouldn't need to change the ecu, go 80mm on the induction side to get the max breathing.

cheers

bob
