Default RPM signal - where from?

I have an adjustable rpm switch that needs to pick up the signal from the engine. Its says that the signal can be from PCM/ECM, but I dont know what this means.

Does the crank shaft sensor give the RPM signal to the ECU? And is this in the region of 0-5v?

Cheers for any help,

Wayne.

ECM = ECU
Or take it off the back of the clocks
