Default Torque limit on first gear???

I have a 95 UK turbo impreza and when pulling away hard in first gear the car can be felt to pull hard to about 3500rpm then it backs off until it goes hard again at about 4800rpm. Is this normal and is there any way to overcome this??

That's not normal, should be a smooth power delivery.

Are you sure you are not slipping the clutch, and its off boost as the clutch gets to fully home.

This is not a problem, its normal. its nothing to do with torque/gear, simply the fact you are trying to get the car into the fat part of the torque curve from zero MPH.

does it do it from low RPM, with clutch fully engaged, in 2/3/4/5 gears?

It is definatly not the clutch slipping, and it only does it in 1st gear. From low revs in 2,3,4 etc the car pulles fine. Pulling out of a junction hard in 1st it pulls well to begin with then ease off then realy pulls hard again up to the rev limiter. I was wondering if this was some kind of torque limiting to prevent gearbox damage?

I had the exact same on my std. MY96 UK turbo and never found out what it was (if in fact anything was wrong!!) .... spoke to dealer about it just after I got the car but they couldnt find any fault .... no surprise!

I found it quite annoying!!

Do you run it on Optimax .... I didnt at the time, but found this helped a bit!!

Another with the same problem!

Hi, i've had this problem since owning my 95 UK, i've checked everything and i can really sympathise, we've datalogged the car and nothing unordinary has shown up, appart from 100% load and 95% IDC is 1st!!

I'm hoping to get the AFR checked soon to see if it's leaning out, i'm also going to change the plugs again, someone else has reported similar problems and it was down to plugs, i changed mine when i first got the car so it could be. The other thing i might try to do is borrow a known good MAF and try it, hoping the afr's might show if this is a problem.

see my previous post http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=503544

The plugs were changed only 5000 miles ago so i dont think they should need changing again yet. The car has always been run on optimax and I dont think it is running lean as it occasionally bangs (ignites fuel in the exhaust) between gear changes. I have recently changed the exhaust for a decat system but the car had the same problem when fitted with the standard system.

Anyone got any ideas on what i should check or change to overcome this. Could this be possibly be cured with an ECU change, I am thinking of upgrading the standard one soon.

New ECU didn't fix mine, nor did coil packs, crank sensor, O2 sensor etc...etc...etc.....

I'm gunning for MAF, but need to borrow one first as they are near on £300 new!!!
