Default OIL COOLERS ?????

right then. oil coolers. has any one fitted one to a classic??
i have bought one from fleabay from anew digital ..
it is now fitted but the car is still of the road and not running at the mo.
apparently having one of these fitted keeps the engine oil to cool and will ruin my engine with time? can any one help me find out if this is true?

will i have to fit some sort of thermostat so it only uses the cooler when the oil gets to a certain temp?

any help would be appriciated

i have one of those kits too

you can get those thermostats from demon tweaks, but u dont have to have one fitted.

as it will take longer for your oil to warm up, more engine wear will occur in that warming up period, so youll have to wait longer till you can floor it,

its one of them long term thing really, and just up to you, it aint as if your engine will only last a week with it then just blow up.

letting your engine idle for a bit b4 u drive it will help.

one more thing remember to mount the cooler on its side or with the hoses coming out the top, not the bottom or u will get air stuck in it which could go through the engine when its at full load.

had mine mounted infront of the radiator on its side. Alright as long as you dont have a fmic and get some mesh over the bumper to stop any rogue stones damaging it.

The oil cooler instalation in our car is more complicate from that you expect.
It is important to calculate the extra oil amount for the cooler and it is necessary to watch the oil pressure after the installation. Is better to use the oil cooler after the replacement of the OEM oil pump with an upgraded oil pump.

My car took over 30 mins at idle and then fast idle to get the oil up to temp to do the emmisions test at mot time recently, an oil cooler will only make theis period longer, i would personally not fit one without a thermostat...... you could easily find that the oil will be too cool even when driving along with an otherwise warm engine....

i have a front mounted intercooler, and the is room between the rad and intercooler (on mine anyway)

but the air con rad is in the way of the pipes getting round, i think i may have to remove the air con

To be honest you are unlikely to need an oil cooler in the sunny UK, unless you are running serious mods on the track.
I have one fitted, but then I need to contend with 50C weather on a regular basis - and trackdays at air temps of 35 - 38C (we take a break during the summer)
The oil will take longer to warm-up, even with (a highly recommended) thermostat included. I have seen no need for an uprated oil pump, and am running approx 6 bar oil pressure at operating temperatures (2.1 bar-ish at idle)
Think Automotive supplied all of my Mocal stuff, and were very helpful http://www.thinkauto.com/index.htm

Be aware that the oil cooler core is probably the cheapest part of the install - the hoses and connectors for mine cost as much as everything else combined!

I have no pics of the install, but it is 'above' the brake cooling ducting, behind the fog lamp hole in the driver side (for me - LHD) front wing. I made a mesh cover for the fog-lamp hole (fog's had been removed to fit an FMIC anyway) to protect the oil cooler.

The first thing to do is to fit an oil temp guage (and oil pressure if you can) and get an idea of what temps you are running, and see how they compare to the oil manufacturers recommendations for operating temps.
