Question alternative radiators

Looks like my rad has gone again, a slight crack near the bottom rad hose. Is there a stronger alternative to the original or even one from a different car that will fit and maybe even have uprated capacity. The one that has now failed was a second hand one (needed it quick over a bank holiday period) so I will be buying new.

Also is nr the bottom hose a common place for them to go?

Is your's an Impreza with the cross flow radiator (coolant tubes of radiator core run horizontal) ? The company I work for sell a replacement radiator tank for the inlet side but not for the outlet (right hand side) when looking in the engine from the front of the car. We sell replacement copper brass cores to radiator specialists who could re-core your old unit. Problem is, many Subaru's have sides that bolt on to the radiator and the bottom one is always rusted to hell so can't be used - so it's probably a new unit.
Before I bought my Impreza last month, I always wondered why the plastic tanks of cross flow Subarus were more prone to cracking but seeing the position of the exhaust so close to the radiator, I reckon it's the high temperatures which make the plastic more brittle. In my 25 years experience of radiators and engine cooling, I have never seen so many plastic tanks fail on one specific model.
Call your local radiator specialist - he should be able to help.

It could just be you have been unlucky with two rads Jay but also might be that you have a head gasket issue..

Are you still running with no thermostat?

managed to sort it Simon, it was the bottom rad hose had split and was spraying it where it joins the radiator if that makes sense. Took it off on my lunch break and you could only see the split with the pipe in the hand. Managed to cut down the hose slightly and refit so will order some samco's I think.

Was using a stat again, tried another again and temps were averaging about 87 - 88 in normal running so think head gaskets are okay.
Filled it back up just and it is running 1 or 2 degrees cooler as well.

Whilst your on Simon, I am thinking of getting a tsl parallel fuel rail with regulator. Would I need a tweak of the map if I fit it?

Yes Jay.. you are better off waiting until you have a couple of bits to go on..

I wonder if your standard injectors have been modified or only look like standard or the fuel pressure reg has been squashed to deliberatly increase the fuel pressure.

If you fit an SX you may find it is then lean if the standard reg has been altered or it will run fine if it is the injectors, although you could fit a fuel pressure gauge to the system now and then match the pressure.

Might be worth comparing what you get and for how much by talking to Mef

couple of bits meaning bigger turbo and injectors and fmic!!! lol

The tsl one is £149 and you get the regulator with that as well so it will work out cheaper than the Mef option, also knowing tsl it should be quality kit.
Turbo wise, I don't think I want to go down the tdo5 route (too many stories of gearboxes etc) so ideally I want to look for around 320bhp (nice round number) what turbo do you reckon is capable of achieving that (with bigger injectors as well - had a price on some 550cc today from performance subaru for £380+vat per set phase 1)
