fairly sure the connectors are different and your engine would definitely not last long on the sti map.

yes it will fit and yes it will runok in car on optimax fuel. The z5 was used in the pre 96 wrx RA cars defo not 97 (mk2) type r. A simular map to the z4 ecu which i have used for yonks with no problems

Think about it.. The STi runs more boost right?? And the ECU controls the boost & fueling? *BUT* the ECU is not going to be the only difference between the STi and the WRX is it?? Its mapped for the modified STi engine not a standard WRX lump.

the sti has stronger internals and a higher rev limit (possibly different cam profilies as well). Your wrx has its rev set at a limit for a reason, that reason being the longetivity of the engine and the components in it.

Sure you can work out why it wont do your engine much good

No a 97 STi ecu wont work in a 93 wrx, the map is different, i also believe the sensors on the crank etc are different and the ecu is set up to work with these, if it doesnt get the correct feedback it will just shut down.
AFAIK the only compatable ecu for your 93 is a 95/6 wrx ecu.

yes good point Tony, I think it is the cam and crank sensors that are reversed

No doubt it will fit.. and if it works it will give you more power, at the expense of your engine

A z5 ecu is not out of a 97 STI its out of an WRX RA. 97 Cars use a different ecu alltogether. It will be fine. A quote from Scott T..He knows he stuff about classic ecus - he has read a lot of them and has mapped a lot of cars

:

U8 or W6 ECU is standard 1993/1994 WRX
2C is standard 1994 WRX (a bit of a cross-over between U8/W6 and the Z4)
Z4 ECU is 1994-1996 WRX
STi ECU was SA
STi RA ECU was SB
STi 2 ECU was 6K
STi 2 RA ECU was 7K
WRX RA ECU are W9 or Z5
WRX Wagon 1C, 3B, V9
UK/Euro GT/Aus WRX Saloon & Wagon V7, 7D, 6D

Well, I have just had a Z5 fitted to a 1993 JDM WRX wagon, mechanic says its running fine (also replaced the turbo with a TD05, but thats a wagon issue not related to saloons). I'm picking the car up tonight so will let you know if it drives fine.

DJ is spot on with what he tells you, the Z5 is from a WRX ra not sti, its pretty much the same map as a Z4 but with a higher redline. As far I know its no more dangerous than putting a Z4 into a '93/94 classic providing you dont drive through redline with it. I'll keep you posted on how long mine lasts!

It's all been said above, but Z4/Z5 are pretty much the same.
The Japanese Z4 base map is probably the safest/best standard ECU you can run in the UK. In any UK/WRX or even a WRX Wagon with a TD05.

(Thats just put the price of a Z4 up a bit )

Z4, Z5, 6K and 7K all run pretty good fuel/ignition maps. Alot better/cleaner then the earlier ECU. However 6K and 7K are from STi, so would use with caution in a non STi due to the more aggressive timing.

Got my JDM '93 wagon back yesterday - it used to have a TD04 turbo and pump 220PS from the official figures. Now has a TD05 with a Z5 fitted, runs as smooth as silk and way faster with the 260PS from the new set up. Will be saving my pennies now for a new scoobyecu or similar to take advantage of the de-cat exhaust, hopefully that should see it close to 285BHP at which point I'm done with this car and it will be time for something more serious.

No fits in an STI RA if you want a replacement go for a z4 ecu (from a 260ps model late 94 to 96).
you could fit it (as it's a 4 plug ecu iirc) but not good for your engine
