Default Newbie: Mileage\Turbo Life\Sericing Q's :)

Hi,

First up, a big hello, i'm a new member of the forum

I'm looking at buying a Turbo 2000 AWD model Impreza, and i'm just researching the car..

Got a couple of tech questions which it would be great if an owner could help me out with by answering or show me some net links that would help me etc.

Ok..

1) One of the cars i'm looking at has 86k on the clock, is standard except for a dump valve + back box. It has a full Subaru\Specialist history. Is this mileage generally ok?
2) Are the cambelt changes every 45k miles or so? And how much could i expect to pay from a Subaru dealer for one?
3) How long does the standard turbo last? Would it be worth getting it re-conditioned\replaced if its still the standard one? (expensive??)

And..

Anything i should watch out for on the 98-2000 UK model Turbo 2000s??

Many, many thanks for any help.. going viewing at the weekend

Chris.

I bought my 97 UK Turbo 2000 at 88k miles and managed to haggle the guy down quite a bit as big service due at 90k. Subaru wanted a fortune. I did the service myself but was quoted £300 ish by a local specialist including belt which was good. Not sure about Turbo life, I would avoid changing it. If mine goes there are tons of standard turbos on ebay! from people upgrading, I would do this.

1) Thats sort of mileage is fine, as long as it has been looked after
2) 45k yes - Subaru dealer expensive, private specialist £200-£300
3) Don't worry about the turbo, if it goes get a bigger one for £200+!

If its a 99-00 the MAFs are very weak, and cost about £80 inc vat.

Clutches are expensive, budget £400 at very least fitted.

Engines are generally strong.

I have just bought a 95k MY00 W-Reg (£5k btw), so in a good position to answer your qs! I have replaced the MAF (£83 but 10min job), and it runs a lot better - was a little hesistant under boost. Had Magnex back box and centre decat, but getting a Ninja sports cat downpipe fitted today, new clutch next week and then a Tek3 remap (£568 - see the group buy section!).

Although mine has done 95k, by replacing MAF, clutch, decatting completely and remapping I am confident it will be sorted then for a long time (fingers crossed), and running a nice solid 270-280bhp.

Cheers,

Ian.

cheers for the replies

One of the ones i'm looking at (the 86k one) is from a dealer near me (Graham Walker Subaru in chester) i think hes a specialist and not a main dealer (going to check..).. and the cars already had a 'recent clutch' fitted.

MAF sensor.. i'll check the service history and look out for that.. from speaking to the garage on the phone the car sounds good, it was sold by the same garage a year ago and has just come back as a part ex for another newer impreza.. will be interesting to see how many miles the owner did in it.

Another one i'm seeing has had an engine re-build done @ 60k (70k on it now) so i'm a bit dubious.. it may have been absoloutely cained into the ground (just thinking about difs\turbo\clutch\ gearbox etc).

I've also seen a Terzo ltd edition going, are these generaly worth paying a few hundred extra for? Its only done 37k and is standard but he wants £7500...

cheers again!

PS A-Plan quoted me happy at £1195 fully comp with mods declared, i'm 23 with 2yrs no claims
