Buying a wagon...
Can anyone point me in the right direction to a 'buying a scooby wagon' thread? I've got the opportunity to but one from someone I know but can't find a decent thread to look up my facts.........I'm coming from a Prelude 2.2Vtec that has never seen me wrong.......ever,ever, and I want to find out some technical details and problems, if they exist.........
Cheers in advance..Chris.

I own a My98 classic wagon, had it since sep 04. Since then had nothing go wrong on the car.
You just need to make sure you warm the car up properly before using boost and make sure you cool it down before switching off.

best bet would be to buy one from the for sale forum, you have a greater chance of finding out more about the cars history.
difficult to give advice without knowing your requirments and budget, if you find a wagon you are interested in it will be easier to answer specific questions.

Pick one with low milage, as quite a few bits on mine are wearing out (95k, MY00 UK) I had to replace the clutch and turbo.
Make sure it is HPI clear and all the paintwork is the same colour, there are a lot of nails out there! Resprayed bonnets and bumpers will be the norm due to stonechips.
I'd get a UK car, they seem to suffer less from big end failure and are way cheaper to insure.

UK MY00. Done over 100k, and only ever let me down once when the handbrake seized. My mechanic managed to free it off, and didn't need any parts so not an expensive fault to rectify. Clutch was changed at 90k and air con belt is starting to show signs of wear so will be done at next service.
Had a few mods but still as reliable as it was in std form. Get one that has been looked after and find a good specialist garage to maintain it and it should give you years of reliable and inexpensive driving. Highly recommended.

Basically, mechanically, not different to the saloon. Just as easy to mod, if thats what you fancy doing.
Little bit heavier but imho looks better, not as in your face as the saloons with their large rear spoilers. I can put two mountain bikes plus gear in the back no problem. All round much more of a useable car. I'm on my second classic wagon 8D
All above comments such as HPI possible RAC check all sensible things to do when buing any car.
Any particualr questions just ask.
cheers

as above, i didn't think i would ever buy an impreza because of the image, but now i have my classic wagon am very content. excellent blend of speed and practicality and looks ok to me, but doesn't attract the hooligans. my only complaints are that it can be a little creaky in the rear, perhaps more so when cold; it could be a bit quicker and actually i think is expensive to modify relative to other turbocharged cars (got 270 bhp reliably from my mr2 turbo for £400); modified exhaust makes more cabin noise than a saloon?? i think?? apart from that, no complaints, no problems, so far.

hello trails,
i've got an h&s 3" backbox which is fine but slightly boomy at motorway speeds. am getting sports cat downpipe fitted tomorrow so hope it's not too much louder! still got standard centre but have considered resonated version, surely that will be louder than normal due to bore size or have i got it wrong?
cheers

Hi Chris (and everyone else)
About 4 weeks ago got my first scooby wagon. Thanksfully, no problems whatsoever so far. The car is by far the most responsive handling car I've ever owned (even better than my first motor, a 1700 rally prepped mk1 essie 116 at the wheels eventually). Not the fastest in a straight line but the cornering and feel more than make up for it. As others say the wagon also carries "stealth" capability. Doesn't attract the Saxo spoons the same as a saloon but offers more as a regular car.
Others have better experience on reliability but the general feel I get is over-service it with oil and tend to problems before they get serious. Should be able to do good high mileages if looked after well.
Short on the luxury items but who needs heated seats !!!
In my view (so far) the scooby wagon is the perfect compromise between a mondeo runaround and evo VIII monster.
Keep us informed dude

Quick note to luke m
I agree about tuning costs. However, the technical issues with modern motors make everything difficult.
Best, most tunable car ever, IMHO is sierra/sapphire cossie. 300bhp without any significant changes and awesome reliability if looked after well.
A mates cossie from a few years ago is still by far the quickest car I've ever experienced, felt like the hand of god was pushing you.....
I suspect it would be hard to make a scooby the same and retain any reliability...... but the cossie was RWD so in the twisties who knows....
Anyway, keep it cool
