dump valve question,
am i right in thinking the standard dump/recirc valve on the impreza connects to the intercooler and then to a large metal pipe at the back of the manifoldi want to remove the standard one and replace it with an after market dv, these i believe are usually attached to the intercooler? is it possible to attach it to the large metal pipe mentioned earlier instead of the the intercooler? will it work the same or does it have to be attached to the intercooer.

think it depends on what year of car you have...older classics have recirc valve independent of intercooler..newer cars valve is connected onto the intercooler.
makes sense to work with what you have got..so if valve is currently fitted onto intercooler then your aftermarket one will need fitting kit to replace standard recirc....?
if going for vta type valve then you'll need kit to have blanking plug cos you wont connect other end back into the induction circle....
well something like that...hahhahaa sure someone will correct me..
good luck
2 types of fitment really, pre99 and post 99.
pre 99 generally have rubber hose from the intercooler to the dump valve, then from the dump valve to the inlet pipe.
post 99 dump valves bolt on to the intercooler and just have the pipe to the inlet.
actually, they both have a vac line as well but you get the idea.
look on the forge motorsport site under impreza dump valves, they have pics of all model years versions

the reason i asked was because the intercooler on my car was about buggered, all the fins were beny over etc, so brought a friends spare one, which came from a 99 turbo, (my car a 98), so were the dv would be mounted the idle control valve is in the way, think its the idle control valve, so thats why i thought about mounting it on the pipe mentioned earlier, or makeing a new tube to mount the dv on, does the hole in the intercooler were the dv bolts to have to be that size, as i could make the hole in to an oval and fabricate a new bracket that fits further to the right thus clearing the idle control valve, or am i just confuseing myself?
basically does the size of that hole have any relevance to the way the intercooler works, if not i could just enlarge it, or move it to the right.
