Had some troubles with my alternator and rebuilt it last night using an old one and a new voltage regulator.

Now, my main question is how hot are these things supposed to get, I never really took notice of it before. I notice now that the thing gets damn hot real quick. After about 10 minutes it gets uncomfortably hot to touch and after a drive it makes water sizzle. Is this normal? Should I go just go look for a complete unit at a scrap yard? A new unit from the local agent costs the equivalent of GBP636!

just out of interest im dismantling my alternator, which way does the bolt come off, normal anticlockwise or the wrong clockwise way.
