Default Turbo Engine Ticking!

Does anybody on here know what the problem with my engine might be? On idle its quiet, but as you gentle press the throttle she starts ticking at around 1000 rpm (sounds like the Duracell bunny). Does'nt matter if the engine is hot or cold - it still does it. Oil and water levels etc are fine. The car is a 97 UK spec with 81k on the clock and no mods!

Any ideas??

Cheers

Aled

Take a long steel tipped and shafted screwdriver and rest the tip against various parts of the engine (must be running at noisy rpm) with the handle in your ear, try not to get any body part in the rotating bits, that hurts and then using the screwdriver as a stethoscope track the engine down, if its constant at 1k rpm, my guess would be on the following in no particular order (and dont be shocked at the noises your engine makes....)

1) cam tensioner
2) cam belt (got a lump of muck on it somewhere)
3) tappet (could be oil pressure related, could be dirt, could be the engine needs a thicker oil)
4) could be power steering pump
5) could be something on clutch assembly

Try pulling the throttle open while under the bonnet and trace the noise.
Immediate thoughts are boost solenoid or a noisy injector.

Water pumps tick when they are on the way out, but prob an injector.

does it go away as revs rise or can you still hear it at, say 3k rpm? If so then i'd say injector, they all do that sir
