Cool Can a performace panel filter make a difference?

I have just purchased a JR performance panel filter for my UK 02 STI..

Having only put it in this morning I have noticed the car feels much more responsive and the noise of sucking in air has much improved !

I dont think that it's my imagination and that it has really improved the performance of the car..

Sounds good with my Ninja backbox.....

Is this really true?

Yes it's true, i have the same on my Wagon and it revs a lot more
freely and seems happier.

Mind you, you should have seen the state of the old filter, i would be
amazed if it did'nt make some sort of a benefit!!!

I fitted an STi panel filter to my MY03 JDM STi Spec C when she first went on the rollers, upped the power by 12bhp and 15lbs of torque (car was still on the rolling road when the filter was changed) and was more responsive after 6.5k to the red line, plus a bit more induction noise which was nice

This is quite an interesting topic. We have measured the pressure drop down the intake system and found that the (new not used) filter is just about the least restrictive part of the whole system so you would expect no gain in performance by changing it or even removing it completely. This of course is at odds with what you and some others have found in various tests when replacement filters have been fitted. Having said that, other tests have found no benefit at all.

If a gain is seen, we feel it's either down to the fact that the original filter has been replaced by a new one which is obviously in better condition or, that the airflow as seen by the AFM has been changed in some way and the result is a slightly leaner mixture which will generally give more power.

When you did your extensive dyno tests, did you get AFR readings on a wideband sensor to see if the mixture changed and if so where in the exhaust system were the figures taken? Was EGT monitored as well as they also provides a nice indication if the mixture has been affected?

Regards

Mike

Mike,

AFR's were unaffected (these were monitored throughtout the whole test regime, via a wideband sensor). Back to back tests (go back to standard and then going back to the panel filter that was tested, then back again and then back again - jeesus i'm getting dizzy) showed that the increase were real and consistant...... we were all surprised.

The previous OEM filter that was being swapped with the replacement uprated panel filter was as clean as a whistle.

EGT temps were not measured for that specific stage of testing.

Regards,
Shaun.
