I've got a MY02 WRX and when cold seems to be a little hard to get in 1st and 2nd gears. After 5-10 minutes of driving it works fine. Any ideas what this could be. Maybe its normal and i'll have to get used to it.

I would look at the simple things first.
Get the oil changed (and the diff) to a high quality brand of the right temperature rating for the Impreza/UK use.
If this does not fix the early morning/cold problem then I would suspect the clutch.

My old 911 gearbox was terrible when cold (great when hot) and a change to Castrol Helix oil of the right grade fixed it all.
