Default import cut out on by pass

hi
On my way to the MOT station this morning, i was doing 70 on the by pass and my car would not go, started to judder.
got off the bypass onto a side road and the car spluttered and juddered a little then died out.
Car will start but revs are at 100th of a rev, then dies out again

Anyone got any idea what it could be ????
