Question Turbocharger Opinions

Anyone have any experience/knowlege/opinions of the Momentum EJ5-40T Turbo Charger.
Its claimed to be a 400bhp turbo, bolts straight on and could be an alternative to a TD05/06 18/20G.

My brother-in-law is running this turbo on his USDM 2.5 in Chicago right now and has plenty of praise for in, in terms of it being a bolt-on.

He is changing it soon for a GT30 though, nothing to do with the turbo itself, he just want MORE POWER

I have one if you would like to try it Andy, but personally I think it would be difficult to match the 18g for the same spoolup. For the money though I think it's going to be difficult to beat.

The Dynojet graph on http://www.momentumturbos.com/ has a comparision against a VF34.
The difference in torque at 3000-3500 rpm is very obvious and just what a fast daily use car would need.
Anyone care to comment on how the VF35 torque at these revs would match up? All I have been told is the VF35 has peak torque at lower revs than the VF34, but looses out at top end power.
Paul, If this is the turbo you showed me then perhaps a first run with my VF35 and then very quickly onto the Momentum one?
I was under the impression that a TD05 would spool up even slower than the VF34/35?

When comparing products/results, make sure they are compared on a "LIKE for LIKE" basis. EG: boost, fuel, car version.

The run shown in the graph, comparing the EJ5-40T to a VF34, doesn't show that the EJ5-40T run is with "race fuel".

The XX Tuning graph, comparing the EJ5-40T, to a VF22 is quite interesting.

Mark,
Where on earth did you find that bit of vital info?
All I can find on NASIOC is that the plots were carried out 5 months apart?
There's also a PDX comparision that is not so dramatic.
Also looks like Momentum have made a lot of friends in the US

Nick,

Just looked at the web site you linked too

Go to "data", "dyno sheets". Only the first few have any links.

Looking at the power results from the boost levels, and fuel they've run these at, I'm not certain it's going to be very easy to make 400bhp in the UK !

Looks more like a 350bhp turbo.

This is what i can make of it...
My TD05 16G can produce an air flow of 505CFM
The Momentum EJ5-40T 580CFM
An extra 75CFM equates to an extra 50BHP

My car currently makes 348BHP with the TD05 so this turbo and a map tweak should take it close to 400BHP

I know I have simplified this a bit and there are lots of variables but all being equal does this sound about right?

Thanks for all your input guys
Andy

Paul....
Would love to try this turbo. Thanks
Can you PM me a price for this turbo and Map Tweak.
Thanks

If only thing were so easy. The 20G flows 640cfm @ 1 bar, and a little more at 1.4 bar, but we don't see many people getting anywhere near 440bhp !

Forget the actual figures, but based on the "XX Tuning" graph Momentum have posted, I would say the EJ5-40T flows roughly the same as a VF22.

If you consider a VF22 a 400bhp turbo, the EJ5-40T may well suit you.
