Hi all.

Have a WRX, MY04 with PPP (4 door).

Almost due for its second service and overall seems to be ok.

However, I have noticed something that I 'think' is getting worse but not sure. When I slow down in second gear from about 30 MPH downwards and lift of the gas I am getting what I think is transmission noise. I'm not sure if its from the gear box or 4 wheel drive system (I'm no techie...).

It can sounds like ..ummm Shhh ... Shhhh .....Shhh.... sort of .... and kind of does this with a little jerk (but only slightly). It almost reminds me of the sound of my old Mini I used to drive (about 20 years ago!!).

The car seems to behave OK and otherwise and drives well. I must admit I do let it roll in second (with gas lift off) cos the exhaust note sounds so good. But this noise is getting on my nerves.

I know I can ask the garage (and will do) ... but does anyone have an ideas? I would assume that some noise is going to be expected of a 4 wheel drive system ,,,,?

I have a similar whining noise on my WR1, but always assumed it was because the transmission was derived from a rally car. Third gear is the loudest on mine and is probably the gear that is used most around town. Do you drive around town in second a lot?

is it like a over run wiring sound - mine does the same and has got worse with age

 

my '03 WRX does that quite loudly in 1st gear

 

It's transmission whine, as said largely due to the design of the AWD system.

One thing I would check if it seems to be getting louder is the g/box and diff oil levels..!
