Unhappy Radiator and A/C fans not working

Help! For some reason neither the main radiator fan or the aircon radiator fan next to it will turn on - consequently the car begins to overheat when in traffic, but as soon as you get going again, temperature goes back to normal. I've checked the fuses, relays (all OK) replaced the coolant temp sensor (even though there was no CEL, but did it just in case!) and the thermostat is fine...Agghh.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Cheers

Indo.

p.s car is actually a Forester Turbo, MY99.

Do the fans cut in when the a/c is turned on?

Do you have a multi-meter? If so, you can check if any power goes to the fans when the a/c is activated.

Try also wiring them direct to the battery, do they work?

Mine have packed in too, I have wired them to a seperate switch on the dash, but I know my problem is down to an error my me causing their wiring to melt (headers too near loom!)

Did you find out what the problems were?

I was coming home today and the same thing happened. Driving forwards gets airflow through the radiator and it works fine. Stopped after a fairly brisk drive and the needle started going to the top. Pulled over and let it cool. Then took it really easy going home. Same again...going forward ok, then stop and it started to overheat. Noticed fans not cutting in.

Checked fuses for both fans and ok.

So what is it? Did you get this sorted in the end?

Mine will go in to G-Force as soon as they can have me.

Well I went from ****ting egg-rolls (bricking it) thinking about what nasty things could have go wrong, to a complete relief later on.

Got it home, let it cool, then started by tracing the wiring from the main fan back. Got to just under the coolant reservoir, and nothing. Dead stop. I'm feeling around blind then I find the male connector hanging loose.
Plugged it back in, took the car for a drive, and lo-and-behold the fan is working again.

NO IDEA why the bloody thing came off. I haven't been fiddling with it. No one else has access to it. Last service, I can't see why anyone would have to go near it.

Anyway, I can breathe a bit easier after the inital panic. No extra bills and easy peasy fix. So technically my Scooby can keep it's no problems good behaviour record intact.

BTW it's a MY02 WRX with a few prodrive mods. Saving up some money to buy the 2008 STi when it arrives.
