Default Noisy Gear box????

My subaru has developed a horrible whining noise from the gearbox area. Somebody did tell me that it would be the bearing at the back of the box, but after investigation the bearing seems to be in a good condition. The noise starts in third gear up to 5th when the engine is under load. When you let off the throttle, the noise goes. It is also noisy when you dip the clutch while traveling down the road, but I don't think its the thrust bearing. I have now run out of ideas, could someone please put my poor car to better state by suggesting what it might be. Cheers.

Layshaft bearing by the sounds of it.
A reputable gearbox rebuild place will sort it for you.
