Default Porting standard headers.....

How much does this cost for one?

And how does it compare with getting an aftermarket set of headers. ie Megans?

Note: I haven't done this yet.

I was quoted £150 to port them with another £150 to remove/fit. I assume that includes the up-pipe too.... So not cheap as chips.

Compared to aftermarket...
- The power gains (if any) aren't as large.
- You retain the exhaust rumble, most aftermarket headers sound different. (though it's often said that aftermarket headers make the car quieter).
- Turbo spool-up should improve, aftermarket headers will typically make it worse.
- Fitting aftermarket headers should probably be followed by a remap.

£150 to remove and refit.... I didnt think it was such a big job to remove these.

Why would aftermarket headers make the turbo spool worse ?

Such conflicting information yet very confusing.

If ported properly as shown in tests the standard headers can almost have as good gain as the cheaper aftermarket sets.

Aftermarket headers again depending on which ones will improve spool up. And dramatically with a remap.

The power gains if done correctly can be 25bhp/25lb-s torque. Which is considerable!

Aftermarket headers do change the note, but not quieter. Sounds more like a motorbike on full chat.

£150 to remove and refit...

Depends on the older car they are a **** to remove the heatshields to get the turbo sometimes.

Normally takes an hour to remove and refit the headers, if the uppipe is coming out then that obviously takes alot longer. Just porting the std items though you will leave the uppipe in place.

AFAIK turbo is slower to spool with aftermarket headers.

So this would not be a very desirable mod then, for drivability say. Or is it just like having a bit more lag?

Sorry for being a bit dim in this area

Very worthwhile IMO. Less boost needed to make power.

It will be slightly laggier. I was happy with mine, going from TD04 to TD05+headers.

I had a set of ported oem headers + uppipe fitted yesterday at a cost of £140, or 4 hrs labour. Harvey Smith can supply you with a set of ported headers

I would agree with BOB'5, after i had my HKS headers fitted spool was 400/500rpm later, they did make more power but at higher rpm.

Ported headers are on my to do list to accompany a bigger turbo. I'm a bit confused by the terminology. I have been told about polished oem headers, ported oem headers and ported and matched oem headers. As far as I can understand it, ported and matched is the best option, as matching optimizes the gas flow and headers are best left a bit rough to get the gases flowing - not too polished. Aftermarket headers is different again - I likes me burble so am quite happy with unequal length. However, is there a quality unequal length aftermarket option giving significant gains over oem ported. Bit of a ramble, but anyone??
