Cool Without a Catalytic Converter only 90 Octane is needed???

Hi Guys

Just wondering, in the Subaru Workshop/Service manual for 97/98 Impreza under the general section (5) for Recommended Fuels, Lubricans, Seals and Adhesives ...

It says under point 2 that without a catalytic converter the engine is designed to provide satisfactory performance while producing low exhaust emissions by using a gasoline rating of 90 octane or above!!!!

Now does this apply to a car that has had its catalytic converter removed or actually a model of imprezas made in 97/98 that were made without catalytic converters ... This statement is quite confusing and seems to fly in the face of everything everybody says.

What do you think?

Thanks

Edwin

really what it means is that the engine as a unit is a low emission producer, and in the event of cat failure , toxicity will not be excessive with regard to the environment.

Thanks Buzzard ... I understand that, what I am referring to is the reference to
90 octane. Is this manual saying that if decatted, the car can run on 90 octane?

And if so, does this not fly in the face of everything most people believe????

Another interesting thing is ....
I am in South Africa at an altitude of 1600 metres and only have access to 93 ron.

I run my car on 93 ron all the time, but I did get it remapped out of paranoia and then i found out plenty of people here run the uk classics here on 93 ron without any trouble albeit the car runs a little slower.

I run a MY98 classic with 183 bhp at the wheels ....
