Default How slippy is a slip joint meant to be?

Have acquired a s/hand link pipe for std exhaust headers, but the slip joint is loose enough to turn each piece by hand.
Does the gap get taken up with a bit of heat/ will wrapping & painting seal it/ anything else seal it or is it junk?
