Default Fluctuating Oil Pressure and Temp

Hi, I have a MY99 Classic turbo 2000 with a HKS backbox and VTA dump valve.

Recently the oil pressure needle has started bouncing between 3 1/2 to 5 whereas it used to sit almost always at 5.1. This coincides with the temp bouncing from 100 to 110 (the needle flickers it is not smooth and progressive)

If the car is run off boost then everything is smooth. The car is using a little oil and a little water?

So, is the oil Pump or head gasket on its way out or is it just the effects of getting hot thin oil when thrashing the engine? BTW I drive the car quickly but change gear before 5500rpm so as to reduce some stress

Funnily enough i had the same problem the other day. Low oil pressure and slightly higher than usual temp. Pressure also dropped when cornering hard and idling. This all came on all of a sudden so when i got the car back home it went up on the jack straight away. Found out the oil filter had been pierced. Not a major problem but the symptoms were caused by all my oil being sprayed along the lenght of the underside and not in the engine. Oh, well, at least my suspension wont be going rusty! Lesson learned-check oil every time before driving car!

What about the earth to the sensors ?? normally sensors pick up there earth from the engine block and vary the negative voltage coming back to the gauges.Try getting a jump lead and go direct from the negative terminal of the battery to the engine to make sure theres a good earth. This would maybe account for both sensors reading strange as both of them are in the block.

XTM,

Sorry to sound a bit dumb, but can you explain that a bit more. One of my gauges fluctuates, and seomone suggested the earth as a potential problem?

Basically, connect up 3-5 wires from -ve terminal of the battery to various part of the engine to ensure engine has a good earth.I think it is called earthing mod which can be DIY or you can buy the kit and I believe there is a kit from HKS,which is very nice but cost a bit.

As Chan says above, the engine normally has a braiding or large diameter wire to it from the body to the block because when it is mounted on rubber mounts it is insulated from the rest of the car.You can also get problems if the earth strap is rusty or broken ,you will be pulling the earth from elsewhere like smaller sensor cables.the engine needs to have a good earth to the body .

ok thanks guys, that sounds simple enough. I'll do a search on earthing mod to find some good points.

What's the best cable to use?
