Default Heat Shields - Do I really need them?

Hi

I've taken all the heat shields off to get to the engine / turbo, and without exception, they were all badly rusted, and I had to crack them off, .. so .. they are all needing replacing.

I'm just wondering, do I actually NEED to replace them ?

any thoughts - greatly appreciated -

thanks - Mark

Further .. It seems I DO need the turbo heat shield. What about the exhaust ones though ? Anybody ?

Thanks - Mark

Default Heat Shields - Replace 'em?

Made a discovery yesterday that the absence of a heatshield on my downpipe, is causing the grease that lubricates the driveshaft to turn to liquid which is then being thrown out of where the drive shaft enters the engine. This I believe is all down to excessive heat being radiated by the exhaust system.

I have used a grease with a higher melting point to see if that helps, but if not - its time to go find a heatshield or exhaust insulating material.

TT

standerd headers can have the lugs cut off and can be wrapped in exhaust wrap
i belive a few of the bigger powered boys are going this way now?

i had my ported headers replaced with the heatshields but the upipe has none

i have the top half of the turbo shield attached also

Car manufacturers, always looking to save pence on the costs of manufacture, do not fit anything for fun.
You can be sure the heatshields will have been found to be necessary during development and testing,
As others have said there are specialist materials available that will substitute but unless you are on the high power quest probably better to stick with standard.

heatsoak of IC etc. as above doubt subarus engineers fitted them for fun

the radition heat from the turbo can be quite excessive and will radiate straight up your IC and heat up the rest of the engine bay

on classics you can cut the turbo heatshield in 2 pieces and fit the upper part to prevent radition into the IC

i have done that, plus i have wrapped the downpipe, no problems here
