Default Jump starting another car?

well guys, got told 2 nights ago that jump starting another car can affect your own car. is this true? what can happen as i have jump started aload of people from work. have a 01 WRX if that helps.

Also wondering how do you know if your car is pinking, over or under boosting? What would be the tell tale signs.

Thanks Morgan

No, I've jump started our Corsa using the Scoob w/o any probs, but was concerned because a few years back after using a cavalier to jump start a car the ABS light remained on.

Jumps starting should be avoided, When you put the jump leads on, the voltage of both cars double - 24 volts then jumps to about 30 volts when both cars are running

so how does the voltage goto 24v?
if you connect the car batterys correctly(pos to pos neg to neg) you will only get 12v(in parallel)the current increases,if you connect them in series the voltage would increase by said amount 12+12 = 24v

Never had a problem jump starting. I notice it's recommended to connect the -tive to the engines or chassis as opposed to directly to the battery. This is probably due to hydrogen being generated in a charging battery that could explode if a spark is generated when (dis)connecting. I worked with a guy, many years ago, who lost an eye after he unclipped the charger lead from a battery without switching the charger off first. Not nice!

Yep, and connecting them in series wouldn't be easy; you'd have to start disconnecting the leads from the batteries (not the jump leads, but the normal ones) and messing around.

If you connected the plus to minus, and minus to plus using the jump leads they'd probably glow very brightly for a short time, let of some smoke and then disappear! This still won't produce more than 12V as far as each car is concerned. (Don't try this at home!)
