knocking from engine. bottom end?
i was wondering if any of your tecno's could shed some light
my brother fitted new coils this morning to a sti ra. they solved the problem with the high speed miss fire, but after test driving, on the way back home myself and my father notice a knocking noise coming from the engine. Sound like bottom end/pistions
i did a search and found something about the maf sensor, my brother had to take the air box out to fit the coils would/could he of knocked damaged something by mistake. i could be barking up the wrong tree completely. i usaully am! lol
the car is a sti ra 1996, and is bog standard
thank you

Some people on here have suggested that a dodgy MAF sensor can cause Big-End failure .............. to my Engineering mind thats just plain BOLLOX!!
Sounds more like something has been moved and is banging on something else (the airbox?) ..... anyone worth their salt will tell you within minutes whether its big end or not!!
Good luck!
Pete

I am not mechanic but from personal experience I was co-driver in two cars (MY99-00) with dodgy MAF and both suffered big end failures after some kms!
Coincidence?
I don't think so...

Come on, the MAF Sensor tells the ECU how much air is entering the engine ..... just how is that going to knock a Big-End out?? You don't need to be a Mechanic to work out that it simply cannot.

det can eat through a piston but also sends shocks down the rod that compress the shells/bearings leading to failure.
pete will probably never have this issue as he never goes over 3000rpm .
