First off there is nothing wrong with the K&N 57i kit, it doesn't affect maf scaling and if properly installed is not maf damaging, however it does sound as though your maf has been damaged, possibly in the transfer process, in resetting the ecu by disconnecting the battery (although thats not necessary when changing an induction) you have rest the ecu to defaults and lost its fuel learning, that has exposed the fact that your maf is probably faulty.
The panel filter in its own right should not do this, mechanical shock will though.
